Geography

“The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.” Barack Obama

Intent

Through teaching Geography in our school, we intend to inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We believe that Geography teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and both natural and human environments, together with an understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. It is fundamental in a language rich curriculum, that children are introduced to, and expected to use, the correct and appropriate geographical vocabulary for their stage of development. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. We want our children to gain confidence and practical experiences of geographical knowledge, understanding and skills that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time, including the positive contributions that they could make as informed global citizens.

Implementation

The Geography lead shall endeavour to implement a progressive and engaging curriculum through the high quality teaching and learning across the whole school. Geography shall be taught as a half-termly topic through vocabulary rich learning, as well as opportunities for fieldwork across every Key Stage. The children will feel safe and happy in Geography lessons which gives them opportunities to explore their own creative development. At All Saints’, we thrive on the importance of field work and ‘real-life’ experience to allow the children to develop their progression of Geographical skills.

Impact

Pupils at All Saints’ Primary School will have a secure understanding of the academic content in their year to progress and be able to make strong contributions as they are delivered Geography throughout the school. There is a high level of pupil enjoyment of Geography across the school, where pupils engage with the world around them and care for it and its people. The pupil voice across the school shows children are confident with an understanding of appropriate vocabulary which supports and extends their understanding at an age appropriate level. There is a clear expectation of an engaging curriculum which develops a range of geographical skills through both classroom and outdoor based learning. We aim for the children of All Saints’ to leave having developed a progression of geographical skills and to show respect and care for the world around them.
