History

“If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.” Michael Crichton

Intent

At All Saints’ Primary School, we shape our curriculum to instil a love of History in all our children.  We aim to provide learning which inspires pupils’ curiosity and fascination about Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our History curriculum has been designed to cover all aspects of the National Curriculum to encourage inquisitive and critical Historians. To ensure that pupils develop a secure knowledge that they can build on, our curriculum is organised into a progression model that outlines the skills, knowledge and vocabulary to be taught in a sequentially coherent way, which encompasses the British Values throughout. Chronological Understanding; Range and depth of Historical knowledge; Interpretation of History; Historical Enquiry; are all mapped out to ensure that pupils build on secure prior knowledge. We firmly believe that everyone is entitled to an ambitious curriculum, therefore ours is designed to create an inclusive curriculum which reflects the lives, cultures and backgrounds of all children in our school.

Implementation

In providing high standards of teaching and learning in History, our curriculum is overseen by the History lead to ensure we implement a knowledge engaged curriculum that is progressive throughout the school. At All Saints’, History is taught as a half-termly topic. These are all detailed in our medium term plans which outline the specific knowledge, skills and vocabulary to be taught in each unit. Alongside this, we feel it is important in enabling all children to gain ‘real-life’ experiences. Our Historians will be given a variety of experiences both in and out of the classroom, where appropriate, to create memorable learning opportunities and to further support and develop their Historical understanding.

Impact

Pupils leave All Saints’ Primary School with a secure understanding of the academic content; with the understanding of how to be socially, morally, spiritually and culturally responsible and aware; how to make positive contributions to our local community and how to endeavour to be the best they can be. Our pupil voice shows that children are confident and able to talk about what they have learnt in History using subject specific vocabulary and demonstrate their love of the subject as they recall their learning over time. Pupil’s work highlights that History is taught at an age appropriate standard across all year groups with opportunities for all children to grow and learn in different ways and acquire knowledge and vocabulary in an appropriate sequence.  We aim for all of our children to leave All Saints’ as respectful, skilful, ambitious pupils with a thirst for historical enquiry and all that life has to offer them.

Please note that History and Geography teaching alternates each half term.
